The Great American Smokeout is an event that is held on the third Thursday of November by the American Cancer Society to encourage Americans to stop smoking tobacco. Today about 1 in 5 US adults smoke cigarettes. Excluding secondhand smoke, smoking is estimated to cause 32% of all cancer deaths in the US, including 83% of lung cancer deaths in men and 76% of lung cancer deaths in women.
