Addictionary: a Glossary of Substance Use Disorder Terminology

The Addictionary is a glossary of substance use disorder terminology, created by the Recovery Research Institute. The glossary encourages using person-first language to destigmatize substance use disorders. Common terms that reinforce stigmas are labeled with a “stigma alert” in the glossary, and an alternate term is provided. Additional resources about reducing stigma are provided throughout.

The Recovery Research Institute is a research institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, dedicated to the advancement of addiction treatment and recovery.
