Around one in six adults in the United States has a mental health disorder. Minority populations are more at risk for serious psychological distress but only half as likely to receive mental health treatment as non-Hispanic whites. And various studies suggest that those with a serious mental illness such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia die an average of 10 to 20 years before their peers.
