HHS Website: Combat COVID

The HHS Combat COVID website, available in English and Spanish, provides information on HHS National Institutes of Health (NIH) COVID-19 phase 2 and 3 prevention and treatment clinical trials and information on plasma and blood donation on one website. It includes studies for people who've never had COVID-19, those with mild to moderate disease, those with severe disease and those who have recovered from COVID-19. Consider joining the effort to help scientists and doctors find safe and effective vaccines and medicines to prevent and treat COVID-19 that will benefit all Americans.

The CDC has developed a tool that provides state-by-state information on vaccine distribution by local health departments and the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report has published COVID-19 Trends among Persons Aged 0-24 Years - United States, March 1-December 12, 2020.

HHS has extended the Community Based Testing Site program for COVID-19 testing, a partnership with national pharmacy and retail chains that has established more than 3,300 COVID-19 testing locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The Urban Indian Health Institute has developed a COVID-19 vaccines website that includes personal stories, the Native2Native video series and fact sheets on the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. 

The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America has released a Medical and Research Advisory Committee statement on the benefits and risks of COVID-19 vaccines on people living with sickle cell disease (SCD).

Health Observance: Blood Donor Month

National Blood Donor Month 2021 logo

HHS and the American Red Cross recognize January as National Blood Donor Month. In addition to critically needed blood donations, the Red Cross is also calling for donations of convalescent plasma from individuals who have fully recovered from a verified COVID-19 diagnosis as well as platelets to help cancer patients.

Study Exploring the Effect of Crizanlizumab on Kidney Function in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Caused by Sickle Cell Disease

This phase 2 clinical trial, sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals, seeks volunteers age 16 years or older with a confirmed diagnosis of SCD. Study is to be conducted at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL, the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System in Chicago, IL, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA, the Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, LA, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, TN and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX.

This longitudinal study, sponsored by the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), seeks healthy, Pima Indian volunteers age 18-55 years old. Study is to be conducted at the NIDDK Phoenix Epidemiology and Clinical Research Branch in Phoenix, AZ.

Internship: CAPAC Research Training Program

The University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer Prevention and Control (CAPAC) Research Training Program is recruiting participants from all racial/ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds to participate in a hands-on research experience in Puerto Rico. The 10-week, full-time research program will provide trainees with seminars and workshops, a stipend and support for travel, housing and research activities in order to advance knowledge of cancer risk, and cancer prevention and control among Hispanic/Latino and non-Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States.
