The MAR and all NN/LM members are saying goodbye to Dr. Angela Ruffin, who has headed the National Network Office (NNO) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) for almost 14 years.  Angela has announced her retirement effective February 28, 2014.  We at MAR will especially miss Angela’s calm and nurturing guidance that facilitated our development as a new regional medical library – just the right mix of advice, oversight, and freedom to experiment.

Angela Ruffin

Angela was appointed Head of the NNO in August 2000.  Before that, she had 10 years of successful experience in coordinating outreach programs for the NN/LM, starting with the first round of Grateful Med outreach projects in 1990.  She also played a key role in NLM’s Partners in Information Access for Public Health Professionals initiative.

Prior to joining NLM, Angela taught at several Schools of Library and Information Science and served as media coordinator for the Durham (NC) City Schools. She received her BA from Spelman College, MLS from Atlanta University (now Clark-Atlanta University), and MEd in educational psychology from Boston University. She then received her Ph.D. in Information and Library Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

In her message to all NN/LM staff, Angela notes “While I am looking forward to a very exciting new life phase, I have so enjoyed working with all of you and contributing in some small way to the mission of NLM and the NN/LM.  It has been an incredibly gratifying professional and personal experience…My plans for retirement will be evolving.  There are places to see, people to meet, community service to do…and more time with friends and family.”

NLM plans for management of the NNO will be announced in the near future. Please join us in congratulating Angela on her career and well-deserved retirement! We will miss her greatly.
