National Medical Librarians Month gives information professionals an opportunity to market their services and highlight their contributions to research, education and improved patient outcomes. MAR celebrated medical librarians by asking them to share stories of activities and events surrounding National Medical Librarians Month.
Congratulations to Schaffer Library of Health Sciences at Albany Medical College. Their entry was randomly selected in the MAR National Medical Librarians Month contest to receive an award for registration and airfare to MLA 2013!
On October 24th, the Schaffer Library of Health Sciences entry and main reading room were transformed into a lively “Information Boulevard.” Library staff pooled creative ideas to engage travelers walking up and down “Access Alley”, “RequestIt! Road”, “EndNote Circle”, “Interactive Education Way”, “Technology Trail”, and “Snack Street” — learning and having fun!
Highlights of the day included interactive learning opportunities, lessons on malware and virus detection, hands-on iPad app experience, access tips, and a QR Code information gathering activity that required participants to stop at each table. Attendees were asked to complete a brief “Did you know” survey which qualified them to win one of four iTunes gift cards.
Giveaways included EndNote CDs (with registration), Molecule Bouncy Balls, and Book lights. Snack Street offered travelers light fair such as popcorn, cotton candy, chocolate, and licorice as they continued on their way. Approximately 300 individuals attended the event and learned something new about the Library.

We had fun for National Medical Librarians’ month by running a “Stump the Librarian” contest. We gave small prizes for the most perplexing questions—$10 gift cards for Cold Stone Creamery. We highlighted the contest on our intranet page, our Hospital Facebook page, and throughout the organization with posters.
We selected four questions which we will be highlighting in the next issue of our library newsletter. This contest was fun, although no one stumped the librarian and all questions were answered, but it shone a light on our services. The contest is over but folks are coming in and when they have a tough question, they ask if they indeed had “stumped the Librarian.”

For the last couple of years we have held a “Question of the Week “contest that has proved popular. This year we decided to change it up a bit and provide questions that would show a bit of our value. Each week we sent out a question and drew a winner from the box of completed entries. The first randomly drawn entry, with the correct answer, would win a $15 gift card to the hospital’s gift shop.

This year’s Excela Health took a three-prong approach. First, the most visible event highlighted our interlibrary loan (ILL) service. Library Services displayed a jar of candy corn in each of our system lunchrooms. Each kernel represented one ILL entered from October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2012 by one of the three system libraries. Employees and medical staff members could guess the number of kernels / ILLs with a $25 gift card awarded to the winner. To provide those working in off-campus locations the opportunity to participate , a picture of the jar with an entry blank on the system’s intranet site was offered. The contest ran from October 24-31.
At the same time, Library Services emailed medical staff department chairs, encouraging them to meet with a librarian to learn about our available e-resources. We also offered to speak at an upcoming department meeting, hoping the first encounter with the chair may have created a library advocate. This way Library Services targeted physicians, who may be less inclined to be contest participants, during the celebration as well.
Finally, the nurses working in the Excela Health Physician Practices (EHPP) received an email about Nursing Reference Center (NRC), one of Library Services’ newest e-resources. Their schedules did not permit many of them to attend one of the training sessions held earlier this year. Library Services is sending the NRC “Take-Away Guide” as a follow-up with a note, encouraging them to use this valuable resource and/or to seek our services. Located outside the hospitals, these nurses are ideal candidates to use our e-products.

These materials are licensed by the Booker Library and can be accessed via the intranet, dashboard and even remotely. Huddle 2: The Booker Library provides a consumer health home delivery service that is available to team members, students, volunteers, patients and their families, the public – basically everyone. Just contact the library with a consumer health question: xxx or email: xxx or on MH Outlook:xxx and a packet of credible, reliable information tailored to the request will be prepared for you for pickup, emailed to you or sent to the home, free of charge. When the library began this outreach service in 2003, 78 packets were mailed out that year. Over the past 9 years, the library has sent out over 4500 packets and was awarded the Blue Ribbon Consumer Health Information Award by the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science as the NJ awardee. The library’s top 10 requests areas in 2011 were nutrition, orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, digestive diseases, oncology, behavioral medicine, pediatrics, pharmacology and physician backgrounds. Get ready to take a “snapshot” of your library on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, for the 4th Annual Library Snapshot Day across New Jersey, sponsored by the NJ State Library and NJ Library Association. “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of New Jersey Libraries,” originated in New Jersey in 2009 to help demonstrate the importance and value of libraries, and raise public awareness that libraries are busier than ever. The goal of this effort is to provide a snapshot of what happens in a typical day in the life of NJ libraries – from checking out books and helping children with homework, to helping residents find jobs, do their taxes, start their own businesses and much more. During Snapshot Day 2012, the Booker Library took pictures of a normal “business” day to illustrate how the library was being used, the type of people using the library and patron comments about how important libraries are to their communities.

The Penn State Hershey Harrell Health Sciences Library celebrated National Medical Librarian Month by hosting the 2nd annual READ Poster Recognition Award Reception. This award is designed to recognize individuals from the Penn State Hershey community who are strong library supporters and have assisted in advancing the mission of the Harrell Health Sciences Library. On October 25, 2012 seven individuals from Penn State Hershey were honored at the reception in the library and their posters were unveiled. Cynthia Robinson, Library Director, gave a presentation on the books each recipient selected for their poster and the background on their involvement with the library. This event provided a way for the library to both recognize our champions and to highlight the variety of projects that the library staff have been involved with. The READ posters will be displayed in the library for the 2012-2013 cycle to promote learning and scholarship. A committee of faculty and staff, both from within and outside the library, is responsible for administering this program.
