Backpacks, composition books, glue sticks, highlighters, notepads, pencils, pens, and three ring binders. These are some of the things that students of all ages may need during the school year. In addition to these standard school supplies remember that National Library of Medicine (NLM) produces a variety of high quality K-12 Science and Health Education resources. These free, reliable materials were created in collaboration with teachers and scientific educators to “help introduce, reinforce and supplement education programs”. The materials from NLM are great for use with students in K-12 as well as those in higher education. The topics covered include:

  • Biology
  • Careers
  • Disaster
  • Environmental Health/Chemistry
  • Forensics and Medical Technology
  • Games
  • General Health
  • Genetics
  • Health Information Tutorials
  • Lesson Plans
  • Projects
  • Spanish-Language Resources

Whether you are new to NLM’s K-12 resources or would like a refresher on what is available, register now for one or both of the upcoming sessions of NLM’s Online Playground: K-12 Science and Health Education Resources. The class will be taught via two sessions held after school hours to allow for participation from educators and library staff in K-12 and higher education settings. The first session will focus on resources for use by those who work with elementary aged students or those in University settings working with future elementary educators. The second session will provide an overview of resources for middle and high school students as well as higher education students. All of the resources covered are at no cost and can be used in part or in whole to supplement current curriculum. They are great for introducing new concepts or for remedial lessons in health and science topics. Everyone at MAR wishes you an amazing and productive school year!
