NN/LM MAR is pleased to announce Rosemarie Taylor, Manager of Library Services from Wilkes–Barre General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, PA as the winner of our Health Literacy Heroes Award promoting health literacy in her organization. Please congratulate Rosemarie, and as you read about her involvement in her organization you will understand why she is our Health Literacy Hero for 2016.
Wilkes-Barre General Hospital recently began a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) focusing on Health Literacy (HL) as a patient risk. Rosemarie was invited to be part of the planning committee for the FMEA and she plays a key role in the committee, not only providing resources, but is an active participant in the process. Since HL is such a large topic, the committee decided to focus on medication instruction during the discharge process since this could affect patient compliance, additional ER visits, and readmissions. It could also impact the hospital’s HCHAPS communication scores. The Library is supporting these efforts by introducing the HL topic to staff and physicians through its newsletter. Additional in-depth HL and Teach-Back education for staff and physicians will be implemented in the near future. An in depth article about Rosemarie’s project with be featured in the next edition of the MAReport.
