August is National Breastfeeding Month. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) support and maintain many diverse resources that include breastfeeding and lactation topics, to help new mothers learn about the benefits and potential risks involved in breastfeeding their babies. Below are just a few resources to get started. Looking for more information on this topic? Contact us to set up a consultation or training for your professional group!
- MedlinePlus Health Topic: Breastfeeding – from NLM’s premiere consumer health resources, explore information on breastfeeding, from introductory information to more specifically related health conditions, statistics, and journal articles. Looking for information on Breastfeeding in multiple languages? MedlinePlus has information on this topic in 14 different languages!
- Breastfeeding vs. Formula Feeding – Through the Medical Encyclopedia on MedlinePlus, learn about the benefits of breastfeeding for both infant and mother’s health, how to prepare for breastfeeding, how breastfeeding works, health and safety issues that may be experienced during breastfeeding, and how to bottle feed a baby. An article is also available on Overcoming breastfeeding problems.
- LactMed® – a TOXNET database – this resource contains information on drugs and other chemicals to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. It includes information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood, and the possible adverse effects in the nursing infant. Suggested therapeutic alternatives to those drugs are provided, where appropriate.
- From the Office on Women’s Health – this resource includes health benefits and challenges of breastfeeding, frequently asked questions, fact sheets, and tips and tricks for breastfeeding on the go, or pumping and storing breast milk for later.
