The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) is not Just for Libraries!

Community-based organizations (CBOs), especially those working with people living with HIV, is an important and growing segment of the NNLM membership. The NNLM HIV/AIDS Coordination Center (NACC) was formed in September 2019 to improve communication with current, past, and potential HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Program (ACIOP) awardees.

The goal of NACC is to improve access to trusted NLM HIV/AIDS information resources, including NNLM training and funding opportunities. The target audience includes ACIOP awardees, community-based organizations, public health departments, public libraries, and other organizations working with people living with HIV.

The HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Program (ACIOP) is a competitive awards program offered by the National Library of Medicine® (NLM) to community-based organizations and libraries to improve HIV/AIDS health information access. The program has been funding organizations that are designing and conducting local projects since 1994.   Projects are designed to:

  • Improve HIV/AIDS health information access for patients, the affected community, caregivers, and the general public
  • Provide access to HIV/AIDS health information in a way that is meaningful to the target population
  • Increase the awareness and use of NLM online and mobile HIV/AIDS resources

Learn more about the ACIOP program, including Resources for Awardees, Currently Funded Projects, and NLM HIV Web Resources. Consider taking the time to view the Demo Reel of NLM Efforts to Support HIV/AIDS Information Outreach which highlights NLM as an emerging leader in innovative approaches to raising awareness around HIV/AIDS in vulnerable populations. Modern technological advances proposed by ACIOP awardees are showcased in the video.

Penny Glassman (MSLS), the Manager of NACC was the lead on two ACIOP projects awarded to the University of Massachusetts Medical School. According to Glassman, “I really enjoyed participating in the program, and especially enjoyed the opportunities I had to learn about other projects during some of the webinars. I wanted to learn more about what other people were doing and how they were overcoming some of the challenges of implementing an HIV outreach project.” The NACC Blog, Continue the Conversation is one way to learn from each other. Email Penny Glassman if you would like to contribute a guest blog post.

NNLM membership is free and is open to libraries, community-based organizations, information centers, health centers, and other types of organizations. If you are not a NNLM member, you can join today at https://nnlm.gov/members/join-network!   CBOs and ACIOP awardees are encouraged to join NNLM and signup for NACC communications to stay informed of NACC activities.

Current ACIOP awardees should continue to contact NLM staff identified in the contract for project related communications.

Stay connected with NACC!
