The NNLM National Center for Data Services is proud to announce the fifth cohort in the Data Internship program<\/a>! The goal of the program is to provide graduate students with practical experiences and skills for obtaining data librarian positions. These paid internships offer opportunities to work with real life data and scenarios while working with a mentor in a guided environment. After a highly competitive application and review process, the following individuals have been selected. They have already begun working with us and will complete their internship on August 7, 2026.<\/p>\n

This year, interns will work on projects with three partner sites:<\/p>\n

Project 1: Indiana University Libraries<\/strong><\/h2>\n

“Cleaning, Analyzing, and Visualizing Data to Understand Data Services at R1 and R2 Academic Institutions”<\/h4>\n

Kirsten Bedford<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hello! My name is Kirsten Bedford, and I am a recent Master of Science in Information graduate from Florida State University. Prior to my graduate studies I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Chinese (also from Florida State University), and was greatly interested in information behavior and language processing. Throughout my graduate program I specialized in information behavior, data organization, and digital curation. My professional expertise is in academic libraries, where I have held different roles including, Scholar Support Desk Assistant, Research Repository Assistant, and most recently, Social Science Library Associate. I love connecting with students and faculty, working with diverse LIS professionals, and supporting the research process. I hope to one day work in a digital\/data librarianship role, where I promote literacy, support the research lifecycle, and make information more accessible. In my free time I love to read books, watch international films (big Criterion Collection fan!), and play musical instruments. I am excited to work with all of the other NCDS interns and hope to hone my data skills through more projects!<\/p>\n

Sarina Haryanto<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"Hello! My name is Sarina Haryanto, and I am completing my second year in the MLIS program at the University of Washington. I was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland. During my first year of graduate school, I worked as a graduate reference assistant at the Foster Business Library on campus. In the 10-week winter quarter of my second year, I studied Indigenous librarianship and children\u2019s literature in Aotearoa, New Zealand. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management with a minor in Sustainability Studies from the University of Maryland. Before pursuing my graduate studies, I worked as a Library Assistant at my local public library system, which introduced me to the field of library and information science. I look forward to this opportunity to work with data, connect with peers and professionals, and learn new skills that will prepare me for a career in data librarianship.<\/p>\n

Hannah Olson<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"My name is Hannah Olson and I will complete my MLIS from the University of Rhode Island in August of 2026. I have an MS in Neuroscience, a BA in Psychology, and 5 years of experience conducting NIH-funded research in speech perception as a lab manager and research assistant. In pursuing this internship, I am aiming to learn more about the data services currently being offered in universities across the U.S. and how librarians are working directly with data themselves. As a librarian and instructor, I am passionate about meeting learners where they are, supporting research, and promoting literacy in multiple domains. Looking after graduation, I am pursuing health sciences or academic librarianship opportunities in New England!<\/p>\n


\nProject 2: University of Michigan Library<\/b><\/h2>\n

“Beyond the basics: Exploring and systematizing best practices in repositories”<\/h4>\n

Cate Gvon<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"My name is Cate Gvon and I am a Master of Library and Information Science student at UCLA. I research technologies of inclusion, accessible design for visual impairment, and health data governance related to pregnancy, reproductive health, and infertility. As an NCDS Intern, I hope to improve research data interoperability within the University of Michigan\u2019s Deep Blue Repositories and support the reusability, discoverability and preservation of data. At UCLA, I am also a voting member of the UCLA Committee on Disability (UCOD), the Program Coordinator at the UCLA Center for European and Russian Studies, and a researcher in the Disability and VR Lab in the UCLA Disability and Computing Program within the UCLA Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC).<\/p>\n

Brittney Johns<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"My name is Brittney Johns (she\/her). I am pursuing a Master of Library Science at Queens College, CUNY. Before this, I obtained my Bachelor\u2019s in Anthropology and first Master\u2019s in Media Management. My professional background includes library sales and publishing, which inspired my interest in data librarianship. I am interested in how to use data beyond the usual visualization, more in curation, research, and helping others. Outside of the NCDS internship, I am reading, visiting museums, and waiting for the next season of Interview with the Vampire.<\/p>\n

Jenna Kincaid<\/b><\/h3>\n

\"\"My name is Jenna Kincaid and I am a recent graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo\u2019s MS-ILS program. I hold a BA in History from the University of Mary Washington and am currently based in the Hudson Valley region of New York. Previously, I worked in agriculture as a farm manager and community organizer. In transitioning my career to librarianship, I remain committed to ethical resource stewardship. I seek to empower others by making information accessible, meaningful and actionable. In this internship, I look forward to developing my data management skills, learning directly from professionals, and gaining hands-on experience in data Librarianship.<\/p>\n

Erika Vasquez<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"Hi, my name is Erika V\u00e1squez and I am a graduate student at Texas Woman\u2019s University and I am one year away from earning my Master\u2019s in Library Science and Health Studies. My bachelor\u2019s degree is in Human Development and Family Sciences from UT Austin, during which I worked with research projects and completed an honors thesis. My allure to research in all stages of my educational career have exposed me to various types of data, but not as intensively as data librarianship entails. As an aspiring health science or medical librarian, I hope to hone in on data skills through this internship so I can better serve patrons, the academic community and beyond. In my free time, I enjoy hiking and the outdoors, baking, reading, and occasionally crocheting.<\/p>\n

My name is Isha Shadale, and I am an MLIS student at Kent State University, where I am pursuing a concentration in medical librarianship. I also work as a Library Assistant at a public library in Utah. I work in a makerspace, where I help patrons learn new technologies, create projects, and explore their interests. My experiences in public libraries have inspired my interest in medical librarianship and data services because I enjoy helping people find, understand, and use information in meaningful ways. I am excited to be part of this internship cohort, learn more about research data management, and connect with others who are passionate about libraries and data. When I\u2019m not working or studying, I enjoy reading, baking, and finding new places to explore.<\/p>\n

\nBrendan O’Hagen<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\"\"My name is Brendan O’Hagen, and I obtained an MLIS from Pratt Institute with a concentration in Archives in December 2025. My interest in data librarianship began with a class I took in my final semester, and I’m hoping to deepen my knowledge and practical experiences of data services this summer. As I transition to postgraduate life, I hope to pursue a career that combines my growing interest in data services with history and reference services, in a medical, hospital or academic library setting. My work is based around understanding the information needs of diverse groups of users, making resources more accessible and developing critical perspectives about engaging communities. I\u2019m a native Long Islander and current resident of Jersey City, NJ, where I enjoy cooking, exploring different genres of writing, being an uncle and a new cat parent.<\/p>\n
