{"id":2607,"date":"2015-05-08T14:17:34","date_gmt":"2015-05-08T21:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nnlm.gov\/evaluation\/blog\/?p=2607"},"modified":"2019-09-24T10:10:46","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T17:10:46","slug":"low-cost-mapping-tools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nec\/2015\/05\/08\/low-cost-mapping-tools\/","title":{"rendered":"Low Cost Mapping Tools on NLM&#8217;s Community Health Maps Blog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"\/neo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/LeadPoisoiningRisk.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2615 \" src=\"\/neo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/LeadPoisoiningRisk-226x300.png\" alt=\"Map of Childhood Lead Poisoining Risk in Philadelphia, PA from CDC Map Gallery\" width=\"208\" height=\"276\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"20\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Have you ever wanted to be able to use mapping for your outreach needs, but thought that making maps would be too expensive, time-consuming, or just too difficult?\u00a0\u00a0 The National Library of Medicine has a blog called <a href=\"http:\/\/communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community Health Maps: Information on Low Cost Mapping Tools for Community-based Organizations<\/a>, with the goal of facilitating the use of geographic information system (GIS) mapping by providing information about low cost mapping tools, software reviews, best practices, and the experiences of those who have successfully implemented a mapping workflow as part of their work.\u00a0 The blog is moderated by Kurt Menke, a certified GIS professional.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some examples of the kinds of things you can find on the Community Health Maps blog:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A short guide for using <a href=\"http:\/\/communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov\/2015\/02\/24\/field-data-collection-with-iform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iForm for field data collection<\/a>. iForm is an app that can be used on iPads, iPhones and Android devices, and has a free version.\u00a0 Using this app, you could go to different locations, gather data (for example, demographic information about attendance at your program), and view it in tabular or map format.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A description of a project using youth in the Philippines to collect data on the needs of their communities.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov\/2014\/11\/13\/technology-youth-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Technology + Youth = Change<\/a> showed how a dozen donated phones helped 30 young adults survey and map information on access to water, electricity, jobs, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A review of a pilot project done by the Seattle Indian Health Board&#8217;s Urban Indian Health Institute on <a href=\"http:\/\/communityhealthmaps.nlm.nih.gov\/2014\/10\/08\/noise-pollution-and-health-in-the-urban-environment-a-pilot-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noise pollution and health in the urban environment<\/a>.
