There is a way to shine a stronger light on positive program impacts: program success stories. These are short (1-2 page) narratives that are designed to educate policy makers, attract partners, and share effective practices among colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deserves credit in leading a program success story movement within the public health sector. You can find lots of resources at the CDC\u2019s website for developing program success stories. A quick Google search will turn up many success story web pages from public health departments, such as the three listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ohio Department\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthy.ohio.gov\/healthylife\/createcomm\/chcsuccess.aspx\">Creating Healthy Communities Program<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>The Minnesota Department of Health\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/divs\/oshii\/ship\/stories\/\">Statewide Health Improvement Program<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>The CDC<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/stories\/success_stories.htm\"> Division of Adolescent and School Health<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want to create success stories for your program or organization, you need to start with a plan. You want to establish a routine to collect information in a timely manner. To get started, check out the CDC Division of Oral Health\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oralhealth\/state_programs\/success-story-tips.htm\">Tips for Writing an Effective Success Story<\/a>. <\/em>For more details, the CDC offers the workbook <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oralhealth\/publications\/library\/pdf\/success_story_workbook.pdf\">Impact and Value: Telling Your Program\u2019s Story<\/a><\/em>. The CDC Division of Adolescent and School Health also has a how-to guide for writing success stories:<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/stories\/pdf\/dash_2016_success_story_template_web.pdf\"> Success Story Optional Tool<\/a>.<\/em> Finally, you might find this<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oralhealth\/publications\/library\/pdf\/ss_data_collection_tool.pdf\"><em> Success Story Data Collection Tool<\/em> <\/a>helpful for organizing and writing your program story. \u00a0A data collection sheet could be particularly useful if multiple team members are involved in collecting success story data.
