{"id":5782,"date":"2017-06-02T20:55:53","date_gmt":"2017-06-02T20:55:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/?p=5782"},"modified":"2019-09-24T10:10:44","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T17:10:44","slug":"logic-model-hack-constructing-proposals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nec\/2017\/06\/02\/logic-model-hack-constructing-proposals\/","title":{"rendered":"Logic Model Hack: Constructing Proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Logic models are program planning tools but they have many other uses (new to logic models? \u00a0See these\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/category\/logic-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posts<\/a>).\u00a0 The NEO has a series of \u201clogic model hacks\u201d that are about other ways logic models can be used (this is the second one, so it\u2019s a series).<\/p>\n<p>The logic model is a great help when\u00a0writing proposals (look at the sample logic model below to see how this could work):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Inputs area is helpful for writing the budget.<\/li>\n<li>The Activities\/Reach area is helpful for putting together the methodologies section or description of project for the proposal.<\/li>\n<li>The Interim and Long-Term Outcomes can be used in the executive summary, along with the activities, explaining briefly what will be done and why.<\/li>\n<li>The Assumptions Section can be used to preempt questions reviewers might ask.<\/li>\n<li>The External Factors section can be used to help with potential supporting organizations, and also ensure that you describe how you will overcome barriers.<\/li>\n<li>And then, <em>of course<\/em>, the activities and outcomes can be used to help create an evaluation plan (see earlier posts <em>From Logic Model to Proposal Evaluation,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/from-logic-model-to-proposal-evaluation-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part 1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/from-logic-model-to-proposal-evaluation-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part 2<\/a><\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/Logic-Model-Vampires.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5784 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/neo\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/Logic-Model-Vampires.jpg\" alt=\"Example of logic model using the dusk to dawn project\" width=\"646\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nec\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/Logic-Model-Vampires.jpg 646w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nec\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/Logic-Model-Vampires-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I want to describe an experience I had where the logic model was used in a way I had not thought of when\u00a0writing a proposal. \u00a0The goal of the project was\u00a0to transform a current website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/research\/centers\/research-on-women-with-disabilities\/\">CROWD<\/a>) into a robust web resource for health information for women with disabilities. \u00a0I was helping one of the planners write a logic model that would help to work through the project\u2019s evaluation plan for the proposal they were working on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tirr.memorialhermann.org\/journal\/2014-fall\/women-s-disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Margaret Nosek, PhD<\/a> of Baylor College of Medicine and TIRR Memorial Hermann headed up this project, with the librarians of TIRR Memorial Hermann (Brenda Eames) and the Texas Medical Center Library (Beatriz Varman and Marcus Spann).\u00a0 I sat down with Dr. Nosek to discuss the logic model and how it could be used. \u00a0I wanted to write about this today because I thought she used the logic model Assumptions section in a unique way that worked well for her proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nosek used the Assumptions section to work through the assumptions that could be used to describe a logical justification for the need and timeliness for this project.\u00a0 In the assumptions section, she listed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone knows a woman with a disability<\/li>\n<li>Every woman with a disability has a large circle of contacts, personal and medical<\/li>\n<li>Use of internet and mobile technologies is on the rise<\/li>\n<li>Use of internet for health information is strong and growing stronger<\/li>\n<li>Most health-related websites make no mention of any disability<\/li>\n<li>Most websites on health are image based with poor quality descriptors for accessible access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each statement here is an assumption, but together, they make up an argument for the need for a high quality web resource for up to date health information for women with disabilities. You might be\u00a0thinking \u201cmany of these assumptions could be strengthened with data.\u201d \u00a0For the actual proposal, Dr. Nosek tightened up the argument and included data to support the justification for the project.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that Cindy Olney likes to say is that logic models are written in pencil \u2013 in other words, whether you actually use a pencil\u00a0or not, they can be changed and adjusted as needed.\u00a0 I know that this is not the usual way to use the Assumptions section of a logic model, but if I were writing a proposal I might think of taking the Assumptions section and re-doing it this way, just for the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on doing logic models, see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/neo\/professional-development\/guides\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Booklet 2:\u00a0Planning Outcomes Based Outreach Projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Logic models are program planning tools but they have many other uses (new to logic models? \u00a0See these\u00a0posts).\u00a0 The NEO has a series of \u201clogic model hacks\u201d that are about other ways logic models can be used (this is the second one, so it\u2019s a series).
