{"id":1075,"date":"2021-08-05T15:43:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T15:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/?p=1075"},"modified":"2021-08-05T16:05:02","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T16:05:02","slug":"e-book-highlight-evidence-based-public-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/e-book-highlight-evidence-based-public-health\/","title":{"rendered":"e-Book Highlight:  Evidence-Based Public Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1076 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/ebphbook.jpg\" alt=\"Evidence Based Public Health\" width=\"140\" height=\"190\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Evidence-Based Public Health<\/em> brings\u00a0 the concepts and practice of evidence-based public health to practitioners and others interested in public health.\u00a0 The authors follow a step-by-step process in designing and implementing public health programs that apply the evidence in designing public health interventions, policies, and practices.<\/p>\n<p>The book offers a sequential (but seldom linear) framework for learning and doing evidence based public health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assess the community<\/li>\n<li>Quantify the issue<\/li>\n<li>Develop an issue statement<\/li>\n<li>Summarize the scientific literature<\/li>\n<li>Develop a program and policy options<\/li>\n<li>Develop an action plan to implement the options<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the program or policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each process in the framework has a chapter devoted to its particular concepts and methods.\u00a0 Methods related to research and economic assessment can span multiple processes in the framework. In economic assessment, analytical tools are covered to pose and answer the question \u201cIs this program or policy worth doing?\u201d (Chapter 4).\u00a0 The research phase or information gathering process is concerned with finding the right research studies and surveillance data to begin answering questions like \u2018Should a public health action be taken?\u2019 and \u2018What action should be taken?\u2019 (Chapter 3).<\/p>\n<p>In the chapter <em>Searching the Scientific Literature<\/em>, four broad categories are given in considering evidence-based decision making.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Original research articles<\/li>\n<li>Narrative review articles<\/li>\n<li>Systematic review articles<\/li>\n<li>Guidelines (where research is translated\u00a0 into formal statements advising practitioners on effective interventions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1077 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/SearchLitFlowChart-233x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/SearchLitFlowChart-233x300.png 233w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2021\/08\/SearchLitFlowChart.png 385w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The authors provide thorough approaches to conducting systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and searching and applying the research literature.<\/p>\n<p>After selecting and organizing search results, the authors recommend creating an evidence matrix of the articles selected to structure and organize the research to more easily identify methods, criteria, and draw comparisons across the selected research (Chapter 8).<\/p>\n<p><em>Evidence-Based Public Health<\/em> is an e-book that was added to the PHDL collection last year.\u00a0 For more information on other books added to the PHDL, read our\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/nphco\/public-health-digital-library-2021-2022-updates\/\">announcement for 2021-2022 updates .<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our e-books are on the STAT-Ref Platform from medical information provider TDS Health.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.statref.com\/document\/Qp3XGLdAjbY4J6vx3gfOGD\">Anjali D.
