Health Literacy On Twitter

Posted by on March 2nd, 2011 Posted in: News From NNLM PNR, Technology, Training & Education

A series of organized twitter discussions on the topic of health literacy is taking place. Health Literacy Missouri, an organization which advocates for health literacy issues at the local and national level, is hosting the next online discussion, Thursday, March 3 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

To participate, go to twitter.com and sign in. Create an account if you don’t have one — it’s quick and easy. Then, in the search box, type #healthlit, which will bring up a list of all the tweets using #healthlit as a hashtag, or subject. Keep refreshing to follow along.

This month’s topic is “Health Literacy’s Role in Health Reform” and all with an interest in the topic are invited to participate. Jessica Rowden of HHS’s Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion will provide an overview of how health literacy fits in with health care changes underway.

In last month’s Health Literacy conversation on twitter, Linda Harris of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion led a discussion on Healthy People 2020 and its role in health literacy. Discussion questions included:

  • What are you doing to address the objectives in the Health Communication and Health Information Technology section of Healthy People 2020? What could organizations and individuals start doing right now?
  • What other objectives in Healthy People 2020 should we focus on to improve health literacy? What opportunities are there beyond the plan?
  • Healthy People 2020 offers flexibility to add new measurements of health literacy. Looking at the objectives under the Health Communication and Health IT section, how should we define success in improving health literacy?

An archive of that conversation is here. We hope to see you on twitter tomorrow!
