June is National Safety Month

Posted by on June 1st, 2015 Posted in: News From NNLM PNR

Injuries are a leading cause of disability for people of all ages – and they are the leading cause of death for Americans ages 1 to 44. But there are many things people can do to stay safe and prevent injuries. Make a difference: Spread the word about ways to reduce the risk of injuries. Encourage communities, workplaces, families, and individuals to identify and report safety hazards.

How can National Safety Month make a difference?

We can all use this month to raise awareness about important safety issues like:

  • Prescription painkiller abuse – 1 in 20 people have used prescription painkillers for nonmedical reasons.
  • Transportation safety – Texting while driving is unsafe, and is illegal in many states. Look up your state’s distracted driving laws.
  • Ergonomics – All types of jobs – even desk jobs – can lead to injuries. Take steps to stay safe at work.
  • Emergency preparedness – Plan ahead to for family health and home safety during disasters.
  • Slips, trips, and falls – Many falls can be prevented. Follow these steps to lower your or your loved one’s risk of falling.

Everyone can get involved in reducing the risk of injuries. Together, we can share information about steps people can take to protect themselves and others.
