Is trying to keep up with information about electronic health records (EHRs) turning everything into a blur? Do you know your HITECH from your HIPAA without screaming “HIE!”? Just how can librarians be a part of the latest way that health information is being used and managed by both clinicians and patients?

Join Nikki Dettmar, Education and Assessment Coordinator, for Making Connections: Electronic Health Records and Librarians, a free online class between February 28 – March 18, 2011  that provides an introduction to electronic health records and the conjunction of health information technology (health IT), information professionals, and patients accessing information through EHRs. The course has been submitted for 3 continuing education credit units from the Medical Library Association, and upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Explain what an electronic health record (EHR) is and how it differs from an electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Describe three or more data categories, elements and systems for EHRs, including clinical decision support systems (CDSS)
  • Identify what the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act is, including the concept of ‘meaningful use’ in relation to EHRs and clinical practice
  • Increase awareness of roles for librarians in the development, implementation and use of EHRs for clinical institutions
  • Describe roles for librarians in the education of patients and the general public regarding EHRs

Interested in learning more? Class size is limited to 30 participants so sign up today at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PNRconnections. Priority will be given to participants from the Pacific Northwest Region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington) with others admitted on a space-available basis. You will receive a personal email from the course instructor within one business day of registering to confirm your place in the course. When registration has closed for the course, the registration link will provide information on how to be added to the waitlist for a future offering of the class. We look forward to having you join us!
