Two Network members have recently signed agreements to conduct Express Outreach Award projects from August 2005 through March 2006.
The successful Express Outreach Award applicants are: Cindy Perkins, Children’s Hospital Central California Medical Library, and Kathryn Sheppard, Glendale Public Library, Glendale, CA. The projects strive to improve access to health information for health professionals and health consumers and to promote the awareness and use of products and services available from the NLM and the NN/LM. Target groups include urban populations, seniors, public libraries and librarians, and minority populations. Congratulations to the following people on their successful proposals:
Cindy Perkins, Children’s Hospital Central California, Medical Library, Madera, CA
Project Title: “Library Automation/Family Resource Center Development”
Description: This project will allow the Children’s Hospital to automate the library and provide better consumer library services. Improvements will be made to the Family Resource Center, including linking the collection to the Heartland Regional Library Network libraries, making materials available for checkout, and building on the existing collection of consumer health materials. In addition, training will be held to teach public, school and academic librarians how to search for consumer health information so that they may provide better services for their users.
Kathryn Sheppard, Glendale Public Library, Glendale, CA
Project Title: “Health Matters! Consumer Health Literacy for Glendale Seniors”
Description: This project involves training seniors ages 55-65 to use computers, adaptive technology and the Internet to find and evaluate health and medical information. A series of workshops and training sessions will be held in three-week blocks, which will be repeated monthly. The majority of sessions will provide training directly to seniors, and the remaining sessions will train the reference staff to assist patrons in the use of online consumer health resources. Through this project, seniors in the community will become better equipped to independently search and access health information, make better use of library services, and make better decisions about their own health care.
These are the final Express Outreach Awards made during the NN/LM 2001 – 2006 contract. The Express Outreach Awards program will resume in May 2006. More information about NN/LM PSR Express Outreach Awards is available at http://nnlm.gov/psr/funding/eoa/.
