Health<\/span>\u00a0misinformation<\/span>\u00a0always has an audience \u2013 from snake oil salesmen of ages past to savvy social media\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0\u201cexperts\u201d and \u201cfake news\u201d reports of the present. The pandemic leaves people vulnerable and uncertain. As sophisticated\u00a0misinformation<\/span>\u00a0peddlers take advantage of our 24\/7 communications torrent, they make it even harder for people to discern\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0information fact from fiction.<\/p>\n

Critically evaluating\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0information is a crucial skill in today\u2019s media-driven society. So is understanding the tactics that new-age charlatans use to dupe well-meaning individuals. This month, the NNLM Reading Club suggests three books to help uncover\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0misinformation<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the strategies used to make it believable and the critical thinking skills needed to discover its real character.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0It’s Probably Nothing: The Stress-Less Guide to Dealing with\u00a0Health<\/span>\u00a0Anxiety, Wellness Fads, and Overhyped Headlines,\u00a0<\/i>experienced\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0writer and editor\u00a0<\/i>Casey Gueren\u00a0<\/i>shares tips to build one\u2019s\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0literacy — like learning to flex your BS detector when searching online. Her tone is bright and cheery \u2013 a \u201cyou got this\u201d approach to becoming smarter\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0readers.<\/p>\n

Director of the Stanford\u00a0Health<\/span>\u00a0Communication Initiative, Emmy-Award winning writer Seema Jasmin, M.D., addresses viral medical myths and why they are so tenacious in her book\u00a0Viral BS: Medical Myths and Why We Fall for Them.<\/i>\u00a0Dr. Yasmin shares the science refuting 46 falsehoods and talks about why such persistent\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0untruths persist.<\/i><\/p>\n

Hype: A Doctor’s Guide to Medical Myths, Exaggerated Claims and Bad Advice\u00a0<\/i>was written by Nina Shapiro, M.D., & collaborator Kristin Loberg. In addition to her clinical practice at UCLA\u2019s Mattel Children’s Hospital, Dr. Shapiro is a noted\u00a0health<\/span>\u00a0writer and commentator.
