2024 NNLM Data Visualization Challenge: Congrats to the Winners!

The National Evaluation Center is pleased to announce the winners of the NNLM Data Visualization Challenge. Now in its second year, the challenge encouraged participants to push the boundaries of their skills by testing out new tools, techniques, or approaches while producing their best visualizations using publicly available data.

Eligibility was open to adults in the United States who had taken part in NNLM activities (e.g., training, events, or funding) or who are health sciences library staff, librarians working in non-library settings, library students, or staff members of the NNLM’s Regional Medical Libraries, Offices, or Centers (ROCs).

All eligible submissions were judged by a panel of three experts in the field:

• Marci Brandenburg, MS, MSI – Bioinformationist at the University of Michigan Taubman Health Science Library
• Sally Gore, MS, MSLIS – Research & Scholarly Communications Services Manager, Lamar Soutter Library at the UMass Chan Medical School
• Kimberly Thomas, MPH – Strategic Evaluation Officer for the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health

For their efforts in showcasing strong visualization techniques and effectively targeting their intended audiences, the 2024 awards were presented to:

• Complex Visualization (First Place) – “Global Snapshot: Physician Distribution and Density of Physicians per 1000 population- Worldwide 2021” by Mirian Ramirez, Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Indiana University School of Medicine
• Complex Visualization (Bright Futures) – “Autism Infographic” by Mary Catherine Ellis, San Diego State University
