The NNLM course Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library, which I sometimes teach, includes a grounding in health literacy for library staff. It also explores health reference and library programming for health information, which are ways that libraries can foster health literacy.
One important point brought up in the course is that literacy and health literacy are not one and the same. Highly literate people can struggle with health literacy. In fact, who at some point hasn’t had trouble understanding medical terminology, the instructions on a prescription bottle, or the details of insurance coverage? I surely have.
George Strawley, M.L.I.S., works on providing consumer-level health information and programs through libraries as well as on the planning and implementation of funding aimed at addressing health disparities. A former librarian in both the public and community college settings, he is now based at the University of Utah.
