Professional Development Award: Melissa Rethlefsen

The Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) Region 4 is thrilled to announce that Melissa Rethlefsen has been awarded a professional development award to attend the Ninth International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication.

Ms. Rethlefsen is the Executive Director at the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center. The goals and objectives for attending this event were articulated in her application.

The focus of the event is on biomedical information, research, and publication, and thus it provides librarians an opportunity to learn about and subsequently teach the latest information in scholarly communication, editorial and funding peer review, scientific and scholarly publication, research and reporting practices, and reproducibility and access. My recent career has focused on these areas, specifically the role of librarians in peer review, reporting and methodological quality, and reproducibility. I have used my work in these areas to train researchers, clinicians, and students on how to access, interpret, and evaluate health information, especially the research literature, and discuss and understand research reproducibility, transparency, and quality.

NNLM offers funding for projects that improve access to health information, increase engagement with research and data, expand professional knowledge, and promote awareness and use of National Library of Medicine resources in local communities. To learn more about NNLM funding, visit nnlm.gov.
