In this presentation, the speakers will offer insight into making appropriate health information more accessible to patients, and therefore lessening the likelihood of misinformation related to the self-management of diabetes. The speakers will describe the implementation of interventions design to reinforce self-care practices and daily decision making among patients managing a chronic disease.

Dr. Koren Goodman is an Equity in Action Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at Kean University, New Jersey.  As an educator, Dr. Goodman is committed to a culturally responsive pedagogy, meeting students at their respective level of need, and ensuring students bridge their academic studies with the practical application of research methodology. Her research continues in medical and health services research.  As a fellow, Dr. Goodman focuses on transdisciplinary research specific to utilization patterns and improving health systems access among under-resourced communities.

Dr. Jewel Shepherd is the Associate Dean for Business Graduate Programs and an Associate Professor of Health Services Administration in the Beacom School of Business at the University of South Dakota.  With an earned doctorate in Health Services Research, Dr. Shepherd is an active research faculty member of USD’s Sanford School of Medicine’s Center for Brain and Behavior Research (CBBRe).  Her research interests largely surround access to care for underserved population groups and particularly addressing the operational efficiency of emergency departments based on challenges such as over-utilization, limited resources, and coordination of care.

NNLM Health Misinformation Webinar Series

Through presentations from expert guest speakers, the NNLM Health Misinformation Webinar Series will enable librarians, public health professionals, health educators, and health care providers to explore various aspects of health misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information, and learn practical and evidence-based solutions for how to identify it and help curb its spread.
