NCDS Seeks Health Sciences Library Partners

Posted by on February 13th, 2024 Posted in: #CC/Academic List, Blog, Data Science, Opportunity to participate

The NNLM National Center for Data Services (NCDS) seeks health sciences library partners to serve as additional internship sites* for the 2024 summer internship for graduate students of color interested in data librarianship. Our library partners provide a project for interns, and the interns work with NCDS guidance on the project where they will gain hands-on practical experience. Your library does not need to have data expertise, as the support for completing the project will come from NCDS. The partnering library should however meet frequently with the 3 interns for their site, provide all the documentation, and answer questions to be clear about the data and any other context needed for use. Projects do not solely need to be analysis; your project could be data management, data curation, use of AI, and other projects that provide practical relevant skills. If your project uses tools outside of the knowledge base of NCDS (e.g., specialized institutional software or a particular niche programming language package), please make sure you have expertise on-site for that particular tool.

*Please note: The 2024 summer internship will be fully virtual. However, if you would like to host internship participants physically at your library in future years, please reach out to us.

Please complete the application form by Friday, March 1st if:

  • your library has a data project that will be of benefit to your library;
  • the project can be completed over the summer by several interns undergoing data literacy training, support, and mentoring through NCDS;
  • the project is well-defined, uses an already-existing dataset (health sciences or library data), and clearly falls within a specific area of data librarian work  (Messy data is fine.); and
  • your library has a contact person who a) knows about the data source and what the ultimate goals are of the project, b) will regularly meet with the internship participant(s) working on the site project, and c) will attend their final presentations.

Reach out to ncds@nnlm.gov with any questions you may have.
