NIH Accelerates 2024 Public Access Policy Rollout

Posted by on May 6th, 2025 Posted in: Data Science, Partners Sharing Information

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is advancing its commitment to open science by accelerating the implementation of the 2024 Public Access Policy. Effective July 1, 2025, this policy mandates that all NIH-funded researchers submit their Author Accepted Manuscripts to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. These manuscripts must be made publicly available without any embargo upon the official date of publication.

This update replaces the previous 12-month embargo period, which aligns with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s directive to ensure free, immediate, and equitable access to federally funded research. The NIH anticipates that this change will enhance the dissemination of research findings, fostering greater collaboration and accelerating scientific discovery.

The NIH has also provided supplemental guidance on publication costs and government use licenses to support researchers in complying with the new policy. Researchers are encouraged to review the NIH’s official notices and guidance documents to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and timelines. For more information, check out the NIH Director’s statement and the NIH Office of Science Policy blog
