Get Your LIS Course CHIS Certified at No Cost

Posted by on December 4th, 2025 Posted in: #CC/Academic List, Request for Applications

Do you or someone you know teach a health information library course? In partnership with MLA, NNLM offers a unique opportunity for LIS and iSchool programs to get their health information-related course(s) approved to offer a Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS). By aligning a course with CHIS core competencies, instructors provide students with concrete capabilities, from identifying reliable health-information resources to evaluating content, understanding health literacy, and navigating ethical issues in health communication.

Teaching a CHIS-certified course in your LIS or iSchool program is a great opportunity for students to show that they’ve gained knowledge and skills in providing health information services to consumers and an extra skill to add to their resume. This converts classroom learning into real-world service: whether future librarians work in public, medical, or academic libraries, they’ll be equipped to respond to real consumer health information inquiries with confidence.

Who Can Participate?

LIS and iSchool instructors teaching health information-related courses, subjects like consumer health information, health informatics, and health sciences librarianship. It is not limited to schools in a specific region, and any LIS/iSchool program in the country is eligible to participate.

Is There a Fee?

No! With this partnership, the Medical Library Association (MLA) will waive the approved course application fee for professors participating in the program. Additionally, NNLM will cover the CHIS application fee (a $99 value) for level 1 or level 2, including renewals for students who complete the course.

Who Should I Contact?
