The Network of the National Library of Medicine is pleased to open registration for the eighth cohort of Bioinformatics and Biology Essentials for Librarians: Databases, Tools, and Clinical Applications.

This 14-week, 30 credit-hour, self-paced online class reviews basic biology concepts and provides hands-on experience with National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) molecular biology databases. This class is designed for librarians who offer, or intend to offer, bioinformatics services; and also for librarians who use gene and protein information on a periodic or irregular basis to serve their patrons. Participants who successfully complete the class are invited to join an alumni forum that includes discussion and additional learning opportunities.

Expect to spend between 2 and 3 hours per week working through this class.

This course includes a review of basic biology concepts, but if you lack a science background and/or wish to start this course with extra confidence, consider completing Genetics 101 (starting this Wednesday, and also free!) before this course.

Subject matter experts for this course include staff scientists from NCBI, Peter Cooper, PhD and Majda Valjavec-Gratian, PhD.
