March 2024 Reading Club: Women’s History Month

For March, in recognition of Women’s History Month, the NNLM Reading Club brings awareness to Women in Medicine featuring three new books:

• The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine by Janice Nimura
• The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing by Lori Alvord and Elizabeth Cohen Van Pelt
• Twice as Hard: The Stories of Black Women Who Fought to Become Physicians, from the Civil War to the 21st Century by Jasmine Brown

In addition to three great titles this month, check out Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians the National Library of Medicine’s traveling and online exhibits. There is even a virtual escape room to help you explore the exhibit!

Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive an MD from an American Medical School, is featured in the exhibit as well as in one of our titles this month. The National Library of Medicine also has a two-part series in Circulating Now and a curated exhibit about Dr. Blackwell.
