The National Institute of Health (NIH) is awarding 19 awards (roughly $74.5 million in funding) to advance data science, catalyze innovation and initiate health discoveries across Africa. Under the new Harnessing Data Science for Health Discovery and Innovation in Africa (DS-I Africa) program, the awards will establish data science research and training activities across Africa, including a data science platform and coordinating center, research hubs, data science research training programs, and projects focused on studying the ethical, legal and social implications of data science research.
