Posted in: #CC/Academic List, #Health Interest List, #Health Sciences List, #Public/K-12 List, Public Libraries

Health Literacy and Libraries Book CoverNNLM staffers and associates contributed chapters to Health Literacy and Libraries, a new book from the Medical Library Association edited by Emily Vardell and Deborah H. Charbonneau.

The book presents a practical and accessible guide to meet the needs of librarians, health literacy researchers, and information and service professionals seeking to address health literacy needs in their communities.

Kristi Torp, who has worked with NNLM Regions 4 and 5, joined with Region 4 Engagement Specialist George Strawley and Region 6 Engagement Coordinator Darlene Kaskie to pen a chapter on “Reading Clubs: Having Health Conversations in Libraries.”

Region 4 Engagement Specialist David Brown co-authored a chapter on “Public Libraries” for a section of the book connecting health literacy to various types of libraries. Other contributors to the chapter included Maggie Shawcross of the University of Northern Colorado, Noah Lenstra of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Barbara Alvarez, an instructor and doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin.

Other co-authors based at Region 4 institutions included Angela Murrell at the University of Arizona and Shawn Steidinger at the University of Utah.

Health Literacy and Libraries is available from Rowman & Littlefield in either print or electronic format.
