Public Health Digital Library

Posted in: #CC/Academic List, #Health Interest List, #Health Sciences List, Opportunity to participate

The Public Health Digital Library is a collection of evidence-based information resources developed specifically to enhance public health practice, research, and workforce development. The digital collection is made available to subscribing public health departments and related public health organizations throughout the country.

How it Works

The National Public Health Coordination Office manages access to the centrally managed resource integrating journals, books, and databases.  Users access the PHDL through IP address recognition or remote login. NPHCO works with vendor-publishers to secure best pricing of resources, supporting continuous access, regular instruction, and article delivery of resources not available in the PHDL.  Public Health departments and other organizations can join the program with a yearly fee payable before the start of the access year in May.

Resources Available

  • 290+ e-journal titles offering full-text articles from: JAMA, NEJM, APHJ, Cambridge Press, Oxford Press, Sage, Wiley, and others
  • 80+ e-books:  ICD tools, EBMCalc, Evidence Alerts, Red Book, Evidence-Based Public Health, Essentials of Epidemiology, Public Health Administration
  • Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute, full database of laboratory methods and analyses standards (State PHDs only)
  • Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews for consensus-driven practice and intervention guidelines
  • CABI’s Global Health Database, international coverage of public health, encompassing environment, ecology, food safety, social science, and psychology
  • PolicyMap geographic information system integrating over 150 datasets
  • Departments are paired with a Partner Library, a health sciences library providing users with articles not available through the PHDL collection

For the full collection, visit the PHDL resource page.

Eligible Public Health Departments

  • State public health departments
  • Local health departments
  • An agency or institution can underwrite its territory’s local health departments.
  • Municipal and county departments join as a cohort of 4+ departments
  • City and county departments with populations over 500,00 can join singly.

Public health departments can make the PHDL available to their staff on an annual basis. The annual fee is based on staff size and includes document delivery (interlibrary loan) for articles not in the PHDL.

Departments and public health organizations interested in the Public Health Digital Library can submit an interest form with some information about your organization. For additional information or assistance, please reach out to the National Public Health Coordination Office at phdl@umassmed.edu.
