Your brain cannot store all of that information, so it has to decide what is worth remembering. Memory is the process of storing and then remembering this information.\u00a0 Memory doesn&#8217;t always work perfectly. As you grow older, it may take longer to remember things. Adults may worry about their memory and other thinking abilities, such as taking longer to learn something new. These changes are usually signs of mild forgetfulness \u2014 or age-related forgetfulness \u2014 and are often a normal part of aging.\u00a0However, more serious memory problems could be due to other factors. Dementia is a general term that describes the loss of cognitive functioning or the ability to think, remember, and reason. Dementia is not normal forgetfulness.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/news\/alzheimers-and-brain-awareness-month-2024\">Alzheimer\u2019s and Brain Awareness Month<\/a> in June, the NNLM Reading Club brings awareness to Memory and Dementia featuring three new books this month.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/reading-club\/book\/my-fathers-brain\">My Father\u2019s Brain: Life in the Shadow of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a> by Sandeep Jauhar<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/reading-club\/book\/swimmers\">The Swimmers<\/a> by Julie Otsuka<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nnlm.gov\/reading-club\/book\/remember\">Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting<\/a> by Lisa Genova<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Start the conversation by reading and discussing one of the selected titles and then use the information resources to help you and your readers learn more.
