PubMed Redesign Update – Recording and Questions & Answers

Posted by on August 12th, 2009 Posted in: News from NLM, Resource Sharing & Document Delivery

Thank you for joining us during the PubMed Redesign Update web conference yesterday, August 11, 2009. We apologize if you were not able to join the meeting due to the 125 audio connection limitations, and for your patience during some rather odd audio disturbances during the session.

The audiovisual recording of the session that lasts just a little over a half hour is now available at https://webmeeting.nih.gov/p66847164/ PowerPoint slides from the Medical Library Association Online Users’ Meeting that are similar to yesterday’s presentation are available in the Editor’s Notes of the June 10, 2009 NLM Technical Bulletin

Questions and Answers from the session are available below for your review. Please do not hesitate to contact NCBI with your comments and suggestions at info@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Those of us who prefer regular abstract view don’t have any choice?
There is only going to be one abstract view. If you don’t want to see addition pull- down info, leave the default as is.

Will preferences be set for one session for one My NCBI logon or can we set them for a library?
The setting preferences should function the way they do now.

Will we be able to email results to more than one address?
No, this function will not change.

Single citation matcher, where will that be?
Single citation matcher is staying where it is.  There is a link to it on the home page, and there is currently the intention to add a link to it on the advanced search.

How will we access the MeSH section?
At the top of search box there will be pull-down access for all NCBI databases.

Can advanced search be made the default for My NCBI?
With the redesign there are no plans for that.

Will there be a direct access to Endnote?
No

What will happen to tab for a library’s LINKOUT holdings?
The new location for Tabs like the Review Tab or Free Full text tab were shown on the mockups as being placed in the upper right hand corner under the Filter your Results box.  We’re expecting that a Library’s Linkout tab will now be placed in this area as well.

Will there be any changes to the PubMed homepage, e.g. are the tabs going away?
At this point, we have not been told about any changes to the PubMed homepage.  However, tabs such as Limits, History etc are being removed from the search results page, so we are expecting that these tabs on the homepage would be removed too. These functions would be accessible on the homepage by clicking on the advanced search link.

How does the related articles algorithm work?
The algorithm is based on looking at comparability terminology, authors and mesh indexing.  You can access more information in PubMed Help or search the Technical Bulletin index.

Will there be advanced notice of release date?  If so how much?
We all need that.  The release date has not been determined yet. We will try to give everyone as much of a notice as we can.

Will some of the functions such as Display, Send to, etc. be at the bottom as well as the top of the page?
Not from what I have seen.

Where will the links to search history and search details be?
On the Advanced search page.

Will the RML and/or librarians be given advance notice of release date?
As much as we are given and able to give.

Will there be a tutorial available for performing tasks in the new interface?
The tutorials will be redone as quickly as possible.  There will be quicktours when we compile the questions incoming.  The workbooks for training will be updated as quickly as possible. Please consult the NTCC website for training opportunities.

How do I get the content on the left side column from the results page without losing the proxy link?
This question will be answered at a later date.

What determines the order of buttons to full text? It seems the publishers’ link appears first?
Yes, that is correct. One big reason? There is no guarantee, depending on the view you have, you will see other links besides the publishers’ link.  If you are logged into and accessing your library’s IP, you may see their icons.  In some cases the publisher link is the most common and perhaps only link to full text.

Will it still be possible to create custom search filters or LinkOut buttons to full text?
Yes functionality as we have it now will not change.

If I click on a PM image, I get back to the main page, but then I lose the institutional LinkOut button to full text?
This may be a local situation and you should check with your LinkOut coordinator.

Outside tool currently has some restrictions on its use?
This is a question for outside tool people.

Will we still have the option of showing 50 results per page?
Yes, the display setting will continue to offer a dropdown to change numbers. However the limit will no longer be 500.  The most you will be able to display is 200.

I don’t see “review” at the top of the page you have on the screen.
Remember this is a mockup, not an actual program page. It was simply left out of the mock-up.

Is there a way to get rid of related articles section so we can copy and paste the results page?
You can collapse the box but you will not be able to get rid of the header.
