National Library of Medicine (NLM) Director, Patricia Brennan R.N. PhD, has announced her retirement from NLM and federal service on September 30, 2023.
Dr. Brennan was sworn into office on September 12, 2016 by then NIH Director, Dr. Francis Collins and became the 19th director of the Library and the fourth person to serve as director since the institution became the U.S. National Library of Medicine in 1956. She is also the first nurse, industrial engineer, and woman to serve as an NLM director.
Stephen Sherry, Ph.D., who currently serves as Director of NLM’s National Center for Biotechnology Information and NLM Associate Director for Scientific Data Resources, will serve as the Acting NLM Director while a national search is conducted for the next NLM Director.
