Consumer Health Minute: Disaster and Emergency Planning

In this Consumer Health Minute blog column, National Health Observances have been featured as a way to bring awareness and information to your communities. One of the September observances is National Preparedness Month.

Region 5 communities experience flooding, wildfires, snow storms, droughts, tsunamis, earthquakes, and other disasters. Some of these are happening a lot more frequently causing displacement, injuries, death, and long-term health issues. Many of these disasters cause an additional burden to those already affected by social determinants of health.

Libraries and similar community organizations have been instrumental and integral during disasters such as Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast and the Camp Fire in California. But libraries can also offer information and programs to prepare and recover after similar events.

In addition to the American Library Association, here are some links to resources you might find helpful.
