Celebrating Earth Day

One of the NNLM’s National Initiatives is Environmental Determinants of Health. Environmental factors can influence human health, including physical, chemical, and biological factors that are external to a person, and all related behaviors. Collectively, these are referred to as environmental determinants of health (EDHs). Threats to any one of the EDHs can have an adverse impact on the health and well-being of the population. These environmental threats can occur naturally, human-made, or because of social conditions and ways people live. Addressing these EDHs will directly improve the health of the population. This year, as we Celebrate Earth Day and Health, we highlight our previous book selections about Environmental Health, along with three new, exciting additions:

  • Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes through Indigenous Science by Jessica Hernandez
  • Guardians of the Trees: A Journey of Hope through Healing the Planet by Kinari Webb
  • Waste: One Woman’s Fight Against America’s Dirty Secret by Catherine Coleman Flowers

For information on each of our three featured books, free downloadable book club discussion guides, customizable promotional materials and more, visit NNLM Reading Club: Environmental Health

You may notice a slightly different look to our website. This month we launch our new Reading Club website and a new evaluation tool! For those who are using or reviewing our materials, we encourage you to complete the evaluation form to share with us how you are finding the materials and how we can do better. Simply scroll down to the blue box and select “Share Your Story.” If you are reviewing a specific topic or book page, or have a topic or book in mind, please share that in the last questions which have space for comments.
