As information professionals, we recognize that accurate health information not only increases health literacy but also enhances the quality of life. Medical Library Association offers an opportunity that recognizes the accomplishment of acquiring new consumer health information skills through its Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS). The Network of the National Library of Medicine offers training that is eligible for obtaining this specialization.

Specifically, NNLM created a set of on-demand modules that cover each of the essential competencies outlined by the Medical Library Association for providing consumer health information, providing a pathway to get started acquiring the skills and knowledge needed to become a confident, expert provider of health information to your community.

The first 5 modules were offered 2 years ago and now the last 3 modules are available for CHIS Level 2.

  • Core Competency 6, Literacy and Health Literacy
  • Core Competency 7, Technology and Health
  • Core Competency 8, Ethics and Legal Issues

If you have taken any of the CHIS On-Demand modules you do not need to register again as they appear in the same class. That means you can earn up to 8 continuing education credits qualifying for CHIS Level 1 AND Level 2 in one place.

And remember, NNLM is still taking care of the application fee and the specialization is good for 3 years before needing to be renewed. Learn more about CHIS and NNLM’s sponsorship through the guide.
