Consumer Health Minute: Coping with Grief

Posted by on March 5th, 2025 Posted in: Blog

A young person holding the hand of an older personIndividuals and a whole community can experience grief due to personal loss or major tragedy. How we experience grief can differ from person to person, from event to event.

In addition to your state and local resources, here are some resources to offer those in your community who may be experiencing grief or know of someone who is. These are not meant to be a substitute for professional help that may be needed but can provide some information and support.

MedlinePlus and NIH

MedlinePlus has a health topic page on Bereavement but using the Search Box in the upper right corner and typing in the word “grief” is another way to find information on this already vetted resource.

Here are a few resources available from NIH (National Institutes of Health).

SAMHSA

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) have several resources including ones specific events. An easy way to find these is to use the search box provided in the upper right corner of the website and type in the word “grief”.

Some of these resources can be shared through email and social media and be downloaded as a handout. Here is just a sample.

VA

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a PTSD website which includes information and help related to grief but you may find the website useful for additional information.

CDC

The CDC has a webpage focusing on Grief which includes a link to Mental Health America for help to find counseling and links to resources.

American Psychological Association

The American Psychological Association has resources and tools to help navigate these emotions.
