It’s not surprising that December is Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. You’ll find people heading to stores and online to shop for family, friends, and even for themselves during this holiday season. As much as you might be wanting to give the younger family members everything on their wish lists, it’s a good idea to take a moment to research the safety and appropriateness of some of those items. Though the number of toy related injuries is declining, there was an estimated 209,500 reported toy injuries treated at U.S. hospital emergency departments in 2022 according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Here are some resources to learn more about the safety of toys.
Kidshealth.org has a number of links specific to toy safety in English, Spanish and an audio option.
For recalls, visit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website which includes recalled toys, report an unsafe toy, and sign up to receive email notices.
You may not be able to prevent every injury possible with a toy but know that the safer and age appropriate toy, the more fun they’ll have and a happier holiday will be had by all.
