Fundamentals of Health Data Science

The NNLM National Center for Data Services (NCDS) will host Fundamentals of Health Data Science from January 6 – March 21, 2025. This 10-week course is designed to improve knowledge and skills in data science, enabling learners to add or enhance data science training and services at their institutions.

This course is structured to allow learners to interact with each other, with course facilitators, and with community experts in library data science work. The goal is to help build confidence in discussing data science issues and help connect the growing community of information professionals with expertise in this area.

Throughout this course, learners will read texts, watch instructional videos, discuss topics in data science, complete assignments to help grow their understanding, and analyze a health science dataset. The course will focus on using Python in Google Colaboratory to work with data, including importing, inspecting, cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing datasets.

The NCDS is looking for 60 dedicated learners, and 6 people already familiar with Python to assist as Community Experts in the course. If you are interested in applying for this course as either a learner or a community expert, please see the course page for additional information and application details.

Data Services On-Demand

The NNLM NCDS is also happy to announce the return of the new, improved Data Services On-Demand Modules! These four freely available, self-paced modules offer MLA CE hours and satisfy the core requirement for the MLA Data Services Specialization (DSS) Level I certificate.

The modules cover Research Data Management, Data Sharing, Data Ethics, and Open Science with each class consisting of approximately four hours of readings, videos, knowledge checks, and assignments. While each module provides an in-depth overview of these topics, completion of the Data Services On Demand (DSOD) series provides foundational knowledge for beginning as a data librarian.
