When we say “health care”, we mean medical care. When we say “health literacy”, almost always, we mean medical literacy. In this session we will consider various definitions and measures of health literacy and discuss the distinction between the broader concept of health literacy, which is applicable to everyday life, and medical literacy, which is specific to patients in clinical settings. We’ll also discuss what it means to promote health literacy and demonstrate a practical process to guide health decision making and action planning that is applicable in both clinical and community settings.
