Region 5 Reinstatement Announcement

Posted by on August 19th, 2025 Posted in: Blog

Seattle, WA, August 19, 2025

The University of Washington Health Sciences Library is announcing the court-ordered reinstatement of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM) Region 5 grant, effective through April 30, 2026. The order for grant reinstatement is in response to the original grant cancellation which was initiated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in March of this year, requiring an immediate stop-work order for all staff.

All Region 5 staff positions are fully funded through the NIH grant. The team works with libraries and community-based organizations to support health literacy, advance health equity, improve engagement with research and data, expand professional knowledge, and promote awareness of National Library of Medicine resources within local communities across Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and U.S. Territories and Freely Associated States in the Pacific, with an emphasis on rural and under-resourced communities that lack access to current health information and training resources.

The newly reinstated Region 5 team is working to re-establish a high-impact plan for the remainder of the grant and to communicate priorities with Region 5 members and users as soon as possible.

For more information, and questions please contact nnlm@uw.edu.
