The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR) is pleased to announce two locations in our region that will host the upcoming Making Your Library Promotion Pop! Practical Design Principles and Tools for the Non-Designer Medical Library Association (MLA) continuing education webcast on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 11 am -12:30 pm Pacific time.

In Seattle, WA PNR will host the webcast at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library,  Lab C. Please register at if you plan to attend at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/pnrmlawebcast.

In Spokane, WA the Inland NorthWest Health Science Libraries (INWHSL) will host the webcast at Spokane Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Room 40-215. Please register if you plan to attend at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RYNJ9BR.

Design Pre-assignment
Make a PDF flyer to advertise the following event that will be occurring in your library…imagine that you are inviting other librarians in the area to attend and watch this MLA Webcast with you. Send the PDF to April Aultman Becker: AVAultman@mdanderson.org, by September 23, 12:00 p.m. Central (10:00 am Pacific) time. Make sure to add the following to the subject line “DESIGN PRE-ASSIGNMENT” and we’ll discuss the designs during the webinar.

Workshop Goal: Much of the work librarians do involves creating flyers, displays, handouts, websites and other designs that look good and convey helpful information. Very few librarians have any kind of formal design training and often rely on personal aesthetic preferences along with the opinions and ideas of colleagues. The goal of this program is to empower librarians with basic principles, tools, and processes to begin to improve designs in their own libraries.

Workshop Objectives:
• Learn about and view examples of basic design principles
• Identify processes used to create designs
• Explore practical design tools
• Demonstrate examples of successful design
• Practice revising a handout using the information provided in the webinar
• Discuss the importance of consistency in design across platforms
• Recommend favorite design resources

Homework for after the Webinar
Apply what you’ve learned today about design to one just one handout, flyer, document, webpage, . . . anything that currently exists in your library.

• Enter the email subject line as your last name_DESIGN_Homework
• e.g., Brown_DESIGN_Homework
Submit your homework by September 30, 12:00 p.m. Central time (10:00am Pacific time). Email your proof (photo, PDF, URL) that you’ve completed the assignment. After you submit your homework, you will receive an email with a link to the online evaluation and your certificate. Also, you will receive feedback from April by October 9.
