Given the nation’s limited health literacy, it is essential that clear communication and plain language become standard across medical and public health settings. The Program for Readability In Science & Medicine (PRISM) is a successful plain language initiative launched at Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) in 2005. Using PRISM tools and training, GHRI has dramatically improved the quality and readability of its research consent forms and other print materials. PRISM’s free tools and training resources may help other medical and public health professionals do the same.
