Once a month for the next few months, Region 5 staff will be sharing resources for emergency preparedness. Previously, we shared resources on volcanoes and drought. This month, we’re focusing on wildfires.

Wildfires are increasingly common in NNLM Region 5 locations and can have devastating impacts on health and wellbeing. The following resources provide information about preparing for and recovering from wildfires.

Preparedness and Recovery

MedlinePlus.gov: Wildfires collects information from a wide range of reliable sources on topics such as “How Wildfire Smoke Affects your Body,” “Protecting Children from Wildfire Smoke and Ash,” and “Wildfire Smoke and Burning Eyes: 5 Ways to Cope.” Many of these resources are useful while experiencing a wildfire.

AirNow.gov is a resource from the Environmental Protection Agency and provides  data on current air quality by location. Their Wildfires page includes a map of current fires and smoke conditions, and resources for before, during, and after a fire.

Ready.gov: Wildfires lays out a clear and concise plan to follow to prepare for a wildfire, stay safe during, and respond after a wildfire. This information is available in multiple languages.
