{"id":10353,"date":"2014-07-17T11:38:35","date_gmt":"2014-07-17T18:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nnlm.gov\/pnr\/dragonfly\/?p=10353"},"modified":"2026-02-03T16:51:52","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:51:52","slug":"pnr-rendezvous-for-july-23-salud-se-puede","status":"archive","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/pnr-rendezvous-for-july-23-salud-se-puede\/","title":{"rendered":"PNR Rendezvous for July 23 &#8211; Salud Se Puede"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #222222\"><strong>Salud Se Puede (Good Health Is Possible): Promotoras and Health Information Needs in the Latino Community<\/strong> presented by Seth Doyle of the Northwest Regional Primary Care Association and Cindy Olney of the Outreach Evaluation Resource Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">July 23, 2014 at 1 PM Pacific (noon Alaska 2 PM Mountain)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Community Health Workers (CHWs) continue to gain national recognition as valuable, if not essential, members of the healthcare workforce. \u00a0According to a 2007 CHW Workforce Study conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), there were 86,000 CHWs in the United States in 2000, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects this to be among the fastest growing occupations in the health care field.\u00a0\u00a0CHWs go by many names, including outreach worker, peer\u00a0health educator, and patient navigator. \u00a0In Spanish speaking communities CHWs are commonly referred to as\u00a0promotores(as) de\u00a0salud.\u00a0 CHWs play a vital role in facilitating health care access,\u00a0while addressing\u00a0disparities and improving health outcomes. \u00a0Seth Doyle\u00a0will provide a brief overview of the CHW model and review current examples of CHW practices and initiatives.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Building from this overview, Cindy Olney will describe a story-based method used to assess the Health\u00a0Information Hispanic Outreach (HIHO) Colonias Project conducted by the\u00a0University of Texas Health Science Center Library. \u00a0Promotores de sauld who worked\u00a0with low-income Hispanic neighborhoods (colonias) in the Lower Rio Grande\u00a0Valley were trained to use MedlinePlus en espa\u00f1ol to help residents find\u00a0information about their health concerns.
