The first post in this series on emergency and disaster preparedness focuses on preparedness at home and with family.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make a Kit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. You may need to leave your home with very little notice; help may be hours or days away. The Red Cross has developed an interactive module to help you figure out how much you\u2019ll need for how many days. View the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/arcbrcr.org\/\">Be Red Cross Ready<\/a><\/em> module to get started.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan Ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it\u2019s time to go, you need to have a plan. Consider all of the members of your family when creating your plan. Short guides for planning for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/children\">Children<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/disabilities\">People with Disabilities<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/seniors\">Seniors<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/prepare\/location\/home-family\/pets\">Pets<\/a>, and for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/utility-shut-safety\">safely shutting off utilities<\/a> are available. A handy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fema.gov\/media-library-data\/a260e5fb242216dc62ae380946806677\/FEMA_plan_child_508_071513.pdf\">visual planning chart<\/a> can help you and kids confirm emergency plans. And, don\u2019t forget <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/kids\">Ready.Gov for Kids<\/a> the CDC\u2019s graphic novel, <em>Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be Informed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to emergencies at home and in communities, the Pacific Northwest is at risk for certain kinds of disasters. Get to know about those risks at home and when traveling, and monitor weather conditions. You can monitor weather conditions at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.gov\/\">National Weather Service<\/a> page and be alerted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/com\/weatherreadynation\/mobilephone.html#.VoRrR1Jv_L8\">weather events on your mobile phone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/\">Ready.gov<\/a> site provides information in several languages about making a kit, making a plan and being informed.
