But, as the days become shorter and the dark starts setting in about mid-afternoon, it is easy to be less energized and feel more like hibernating. This is not unusual. However, for those who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), other more intense symptoms may appear such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">sadness\u00a0 \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16045 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/pnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/bed-731162_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/bed-731162_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/bed-731162_1280-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/bed-731162_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/11\/bed-731162_1280.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>gloomy outlook<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">sadness<\/li>\n<li>gloomy outlook<\/li>\n<li>feeling hopeless, worthless, or irritable<\/li>\n<li>loss of interest or pleasure in activities<\/li>\n<li>low energy<\/li>\n<li>difficulty sleeping or oversleeping<\/li>\n<li>carbohydrate cravings and weight gain<\/li>\n<li>thoughts of death or even suicide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The causes of SAD are unknown but it does tend to occur more often in women, in young people, those who live further from the equator, and in\u00a0individuals whose family members (or themselves) have a history of depression.<\/p>\n<p>It is strongly advised not to self diagnose but rather make an appointment to see a psychiatrist or other qualified health professional.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment for SAD varies among individuals. Most often, light therapy is all that is needed. However, others require antidepressant medications or need to see a psychiatrist or other qualified health professional for talk therapy or a combination of therapies.
