Yes, they are wonderfully complicated, but they shape who you are.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>~Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, President and Dean of Morehouse School of Medicine <a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>About 13 percent of the U.S. population identify as Black or African American, but only 5 percent of active physicians do. Eighteen percent of people list themselves as Hispanic or Latino while the representation among doctors is less than 6 percent. <a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> <a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> In order to talk about diversity and equity in health care, we must also discuss diversity and equity in the medical profession.<\/p>\n<p>For the month of October, the NNLM Reading Club recommends three memoirs that explore the personal experiences of physicians of color.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18979\" style=\"width: 581px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18979\" class=\" wp-image-18979\" src=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/pnr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/09\/October_Reading_Club_Book_Covers_200928-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/09\/October_Reading_Club_Book_Covers_200928-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.nnlm.gov\/region_5\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/09\/October_Reading_Club_Book_Covers_200928.jpg 765w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon<\/em> by Alfredo Qui\u00f1ones-Hinojosa, MD l <em>Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor&#8217;s Reflection on Race and Medicine<\/em> by Damon Tweedy, MD l T<em>he Beauty in Breaking: A Memoir<\/em> by Michele Harper, MD<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon <\/em>by Alfredo Qui\u00f1ones-Hinojosa, MD, traces the author\u2019s journey from child in a Mexican village to migrant farmworker in California to brain surgeon and researcher. <em>Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor&#8217;s Reflection on Race and Medicine <\/em>by Damon Tweedy, MD, looks at how both Black doctors and patients must navigate the difficult and often contradictory terrain of race and medicine.
